Day 31 - Skinny Blue

It's late, I'm not happy with the drawing or the paint, but there it is. I believe that makes month no.1 complete. Now, only 11 to go ...

Day 30 - Female

I had a distinct idea in mind when I began this on my commute home tonight, and the drawing turned out to be absolutely nothing like that idea. Maybe I'll actually see that one through on another day, but for the moment, here's what did arrive. Just wish I'd had time to paint her.

Day 29 - Passenger No.3

This guy's face interrupted my script reading on the commute train this morning. It was an interesting face, and worth the distraction. After all, the script will be around tomorrow morning, whereas this guy might never take my train again. At least that's how I justify it to myself,

Day 28 - Continuous line

Well, kind of. At least that was the intention, but there may have been a few adjustments along the way. Super simple though, and interesting in a way, to me at least.

Day 27 - Dredd Like

A switch to Zbrush tonight, a little late in the day. The few sketches I'd started on the iPad today were not resonating at all, so I jumped into 3D. Anyway, not enough time to flesh this out further than a cursory torso, but a fun anatomical sketch nonetheless (though sloppy ...). Kind of reminds me of a cross between Dredd and the Mad Max muscle dude. Minus the gimp gear, sold separately.

Day 26 - 44

Doodle, doodle, doodle, done. This could definitely do with some working into, but sleep beckons.

Day 25 - Sheepish

Doodling curly hair shapes, and a sheep appeared, propping up the bar. Of course.

Day 24 - Passenger no.2

Interesting face, and apparently ok with me staring at him on and off for a good part of the train journey. Sketchbook Pro, iPad.

Day 23 - Train Passenger

Great looking passenger on my commute this morning. He had the look of a harassed Maths or Science high school teacher. iPad, sketchbook pro.

Day 22 - Tree Head

I guess I still have Corey Godbey and his tree related work in my head. That is one big 'tache.

And one I played with. Wasn't sure which to post, so here they both are. Preference?

Day 21 - Mouse

Today see's the return of the symmetrical mode in sketchbook pro. A mouse popped out of randomn marks, and a quick colour pass says I'm done with this one. Keeping it simple today.

Day 20 - Tree Sprites

Fun drawing today inspired by Cory Godbey's work (google him - beautiful line work and mood), and Sunday gives the opportunity to take a little more time in the land of doodles. Of course, this one became a little ambitious, so hasn't got finished (I'd love to get some colour on this at some point...). Click on the image for a bigger version if you feel so inclined.

Ps I have to get more accurate stylus - maybe the new jot pro with Bluetooth magic and a fine tip. This whole nub inaccuracy is getting old.

Day 19 - Pilgrim of Peace

Doodle, doodle, doodle. Trying to keep things simple and not get detail fixated. The title is an afterthought, inspired by a story I heard today on This American Life, and it kind of fits the image.

Day 18 - Star Trek Zombie

I dislike this drawing. A lot. Always hard when you see all of the things that are wrong with a drawing, but run out of time to fix them. Part of the process I suppose. I just have to get faster, and make better choices earlier. Brushes this time, on the iPad. Shock.

Day 17 - Fail

Day 16 - lizard thing

No idea about this one. Little time, little inspiration, little success. But it's here.

Day 15 - Not so Super

Had fun drawing this today, but as seems to be happening on a regular basis, not enough time to take it to the place I'd like it to go. Maybe that's the lesson: either let go, or get faster.

Just because it's faster (the dynamic view was interesting, but just too sloooow), and easy to do, so why not? Plus the books kind of support the Cornucopia idea. Move on, a new week's beginning.

Old Asian man - WIP

Not part of the daily sketch deal, just an ongoing side Zbrush sculpt which I'd like to work up. Early days ...

Day 13 - Ventricle Head

Sketchbook Pro, ink drawing with colour, nothing in mind so following the stylus. Looking at it now, his neck would be quite broken at the angle I have it to his shoulders. Hmm.

Day 11 - Orange

A doodle today whilst trying to sort out my phone upgrade in the Orange/EE store on Oxford St. An hour later, no phone upgraded; one doodle done. Kind of. Next!

Day 10 - space armour

Made it to double digits! Definitely finding this little project a drain, but both Larissa and I are intent in keeping going, so we're thankfully able to drive one another. This was Brushes again, with some filter work thrown on top.

Day 9 - Long Meeting

Another rush job, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as it helps me to (sort of) let go. Changed up and used Brushes for this one after a long meeting today left my head humming.

Day 8 - Rats.

No time today, so it's a rushed job, mildly influenced by our current rat infestation. Joy.

Day 7 - Sea Life

Commute has kicked in, as I'm back to work. Playing around and this is what came out.

Day 6 - Run!

Quick sketch today (yes, the arm proportions are way off), playing with the graphic colour/shape idea. The colours are heavily influenced by a Hellboy still I saw recently.

Day 5 - Two man Robosuit

This came out of a traditional sketch/watercolour session at a cafe in the countryside today, then used the iPad to photograph it and love it up a little. The original drawing is a little ropey, same with the design, but was fun to do.

Day 4 - Zadie

A very mature looking Zadie, in her recently adopted 'please gimme cash' pose. iPad, sketchbook pro.

Day 3 - Alien Head

Tried a test today, giving myself 2 hours to see what I could come up with in Zbrush as a sketch. I'm not entirely happy with this - the design is ok, but the anatomy needs work, and it would have been fun to paint. Another time.

Green Coat

Another older sketch, still on the iPad, but with some pixlrmatic fx thrown over it, just because that stuff is fun to play with.

Happy 2013!

Well, this all seems a little sad really. My last post was in 2010, so this blog really is part time. Actually, it gives part time a bad name. However ...

I've decided to jump on the New Year's bandwagon as a catalyst to push my artwork forward. I am well aware that I will never be even vaguely happy with my artwork unless I'm actually doing it on a daily basis (outside of work art), and hopefully improving in some way by doing so. I'm setting myself the goal of creating a piece of art everyday for the next 365 days, and posting it here. It's a loose brief I know, but gives me the flexibility to create something as simple as a quick sketch, or as involved as a zbrush sculpt. It makes me accountable to, at the very least, myself, and should anyone happen upon this blog and want to comment or follow - the more the merrier.

Here's to creating in 2013!
